The Garden

Winter Solstice 2006

A few photos from the winter solstice 2006.

The autumn leaf fall (when it finally happened) has given the corner of the garden a rich, thick natural mulch which will protect the soil when the hot summer comes. 2007 is forecast to be a record hot year worldwide, and the bare soil suffered this summer just gone in the heat. A lot of that was because I had re-done the garden the previous autumn, and ground cover plants hadn't had time to grow to protect the soil.

The unusually warm weather has had some strange and slightly disturbing effects in the garden - the forsythia in the corner has started to flower (which it doesn't usually do until March-April), and we've had some winter solstice strawberries this year. Now that is just plain wrong, eh?!

Frost-hardy cabbages and a couple of different types of fungus all doing well in the cool, damp conditions though!
